How Midwives Can Address Perinatal Health Disparities

How Midwives Can Address Perinatal Health Disparities

When it comes to maternal and infant health outcomes, the United States lags behind other developed nations. Black women are 2-3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared to white women, and their babies are more likely to be born preterm or with low birth weight. These disparities are rooted in racism and systemic barriers to quality healthcare, including a shortage of healthcare providers in many areas. This is where midwives come in. Midwives, when fully integrated into the U.S. maternity care system, have the potential to reduce perinatal health disparities and help address provider workforce shortages. In the Common Wealth Fund’s article, explore why midwifery care is important, the barriers that limit access to midwifery care, and how expanding access can improve birth outcomes for Black familiesand their babies.
